Welcome to the 2004-2005 season of the Ladywood Blazers Hockey team and Laura Szwed's second season with the team. Laura plays center position. This site will attempt to chronicle the season stats and scores for the Ladywood team as it pertains to sophomore Laura Szwed. Video and news reports will be added as the season progresses. Look for more information as December 4 marks the beginning of the season.
Laura is a co-captin of the Blazers ( not bad for a sophomore ).

This year's all state players were honored at the 3rd Annual Hockey Weekly
High School All State Awards luncheon at Ginopolis inside Compuware Arena
on Saturday afternoon. Former Red Wing and FSN Detroit TV analyst, Mickey
Redmond, was the guest speaker. The first and second team all state players
all received awards from Hockey Weekly, Louisville Hockey and Little Bill's
Trophies.
First Team All State:

Grosse Pointe North, the No. 5 seed, edged No. 4-seed Livonia Ladywood 6-5 as Marissa LaValley scored the game-winning goal at the 6:05 mark of the third period.
The Lady Norsemen built a 5-3 lead after Stephanie Harlan tallied early in the third period, but the Blazers came back to tie 5-5 on two goals by Laura Szwed.
“I told the girls between the second and third period (North had a 4-3 lead) that if Ladywood came back to tie it, to not worry and continue to play our game,” North coach Tim VanEckoute said. “I’m proud of the girls for not losing faith when we lost the two-goal advantage. It’s a big win, and now we get another shot at South in the semis.”
LaValley (two), Christy Sandmair (two), Emily Nelson, and Jessica Richardson scored for the Lady Norsemen, while Szwed had four goals for Ladywood.
LaValley and Szwed were voted their team’s most valuable players.
Grosse Pointe South was scheduled to face Grosse Pointe North in the first semifinal on March 11, and Cranbrook was to play Plymouth-Canton-Salem in the second game that day.

Going into the Michigan Metro Girls Hockey League playoffs that start Saturday
and end March 12, the Plymouth-Canton-Salem and Livonia Ladywood girls ice
hockey teams are radically different squads from a year ago.
Ladywood made the semifinals in last season's playoffs with a senior-dominated squad, losing to eventual state champion Grosse Pointe South, 4-2. Coach Bruce Peck lost nine seniors to graduation, including forward Mary Beth O'Dea -- last season's Miss Hockey.
Despite that, the Blazers finished fourth in the league this season with a
13-6-1 record, and play in the first round at 5 p.m. Saturday.
"After losing so many talented seniors, we weren't sure what to expect.
But things have gone quite well this season," Peck said. "In a way,
we have exceeded expectations, because I don't think anyone could have foreseen
the season going as well as it has."
Despite losing last season's leading scorer in O'Dea, the Blazers returned
their second-leading scorer from last season in sophomore forward Laura Szwed.
Szwed is third in the league with 37 goals and 13 assists.
"Laura is one of the top five players in the league," Peck said.
"She has a good head for the game, and she is a very talented skater.
We needed her to do well this season, and she stepped up. She always knows
where to go, and she has good vision on the ice."
Freshman forward Heather Sartorius has eight goals and 22 assists. Other freshmen
who have played major roles this season are goalie Michelle Wyniemko and forward
Abigail Kienbaum, who has six goals and 18 assists.
"It's an incredibly talented freshmen class," Peck said. "We
had no idea they would come in and make such a huge impact on our team this
season.
"The future is bright because most of our key players are freshmen and
sophomores."
Other key players are sophomore defenseman Angie Iafano, junior defenseman
Danielle Foley, sophomore defenseman Brittney Holtz and junior forward Brittany
Andrews.
Girls HS: Ladywood beats Regina in CHSL Showcase

For the uninitiated to Girls High School Hockey,
the Catholic High School League Showcase game between Livonia Ladywood and
Harper Woods Regina at Orchard Lake St. Mary’s Athletic Complex Feb.
19, was an eye opener.
“I knew that girl’s hockey is growing and getting better, but this is really good, competitive hockey,” said Orchard Lake St. Mary’s Varsity boys coach Brian Klanow. “While their rules allow no checking the intensity level is pretty high and you can tell both of these teams were out to win, even though they called it an exhibition.”
The CHSL only has three girl’s hockey teams in the Archdiocese of Detroit, the third being Farmington Hills Mercy. So the administration didn’t see fit to have a league title for the girls.
But after the Ladywood Blazers came from behind and finally salted the game away with an empty net goal, 5-3, with 31 seconds left, they celebrated heartily without any trophy.
“While we had no trophy for them I’m sure Ladywood feels they have bragging rights for now,” said CHSL associate athletic director Bill Roose. “They can call it the mythical Catholic League championship if they want.
“Prior to the 1970’s, football teams did it all the time before we organized a championships for them.”
The Saddlelites beat Ladywood earlier this season in their only Michigan Metro Girls High School Hockey League game this season, Regina’s first win over Ladywood in five seasons.
While this game didn’t count in the MMGHSHL standings, the Saddlelites were ready to pick up where they left off with their last win over the Blazers.
“Regina came out fast and playing physical hockey while we came out flat,” said Ladywood head coach Bruce Peck. “They really took it to us early in the first period.
“It took us going down by two goals to get mad enough to start fighting back.”
Regina’s leading scorer, Emily Blair, wasted no time with the first goal just 1:11 after the opening drop of the puck with an assist from Erika Schilkey.
At 10:42, it was Danielle Turo who beat Ladywood goalie Michelle Wyniemko while killing a penalty. Jackie Moore set up Turo.
That was probably the wake-up call Blazers leading scorer, Laura Szwed, needed. Szwed scored on the power play 29 seconds later to make it a 2-1 game, Heather Sartorius and Brittney Holtz got the assists.
Both teams locked into a defensive struggle most of the second period until Szwed got a breakaway, but was tripped by Kaitlyn Erne. The referee awarded a penalty shot and Szwed tried to beat Regina goalie Bridgette Gibson to her glove side, but the senior made a terrific save.
Szwed bounced right back 18 seconds later to tie the game, 2-2, on a goal from right in front from Danielle Foley and Sartorius, and that’s the way the period ended.
“We really need our top line of Laura Szwed, Heather Sartorius and Ashley Ballarin to play better if we were going to win,” said Peck. “Laura’s first goal ignited the spark that we needed as our game got better as the game went on.”
Szwed completed a natural hat trick to open the third period at 5:44 (Foley, Sartorius), but Regina was not willing to stay behind for long as Brittany DeBaeke (from Moore and Jessica Beltran) scored 41 seconds later.
The key after that was a tripping call on Turo and Sartorius (from Foley) subsequently scored on the power play with 2:29 to play. Sartorius added the empty-net goal from Holtz and Szwed.
The Blazers out-shot Regina 27-16 for the game.
“It is a testament to our team that we never gave up and kept believing,” said Peck. “In the past we may never have been able to respond from a two-goal deficit to a good team. I believe it goes to show how this team has matured and they are getting better and better the more they play together.”
“After losing to Regina earlier in the year, the last thing we wanted to do was lose to them in the Catholic League game,” he added. “The girls kept their focus and did what they had to do to persevere. I am really proud of their determination and hope they can carry this momentum into the playoffs.”
The Ladywood Blazers not only celebrated a “mythical Catholic League Championship” after a 5-3 win over Regina, they surprised head coach Bruce Peck with a plaque, presented here by Brittany Andrews (left) and Jenna MacDonell. Peck was named Capital Mortgage Funding Coach of the Week, and the ceremony was being filmed for viewing on WDIV Channel 4’s popular high school show, “State Champs.”

LADYWOOD 5, H.W. REGINA 3: Sophomore Laura Szwed figured in all five goals with a hat trick and two assists, while freshman Heather Sartorious contributed two goals and two assists as Livonia Ladywood (15-6-1) defeated Harper Woods Regina (11-8) in the Catholic High School Showcase Saturday morning at Orchard St. Mary's.
Regina took a 2-0 lead in the opening period on goals by Emily Blair and Brittany DeBaecke, but the newly crowned Catholic League champions fought back to make it 2-all after two periods.
"They (Regina) came out strong and took it to us,'' Ladywood coach Bruce Peck said. "But we played better as the game went along.''
Ashley Ballarin picked up a pair of assists in the win, while Danielle Foley also drew an assist.
Ladywood outshot the Saddlelites, 32-20.
Michelle Wyniemko was in goal for Ladywood, while Bridgette
Gibson was the Regina netminder.

LADYWOOD 5, PORT HURON 1: Sophomore Laura Szwed notched a hat trick and one
assist Thursday night as Livonia Ladywood downed host Port Huron at McMorran
Arena.
Ladywood is 14-6-1 overall and 12-6-1 in the Michigan Metro Girls High School Hockey League. Port Huron falls to 2-16 in the league.
Junior Brittany Andrews chipped in with a goal and assist for the Blazers, who led 3-0 after two periods. Junior Mariah McVeigh had the other goal, while freshman Heather Sartorious notched three assists.
Kristyna Walker made 41 stops in goal for Port Huron, while Ladywood's Jessica
Tuggle had just nine saves.

Ladywood recovers from shutout
Goals came at the fast and furious pace Tuesday night as Livonia Ladywood
outgunned host Grosse Pointe Woods University-Liggett, 8-5, in a Michigan
Metro Girls High School Hockey League game.
Ladywood is 13-6-1 overall and 11-6-1 in the league, while Liggett falls to
10-10 and 9-9.
Heather Sartorious led the victorious Blazers with a hat trick and three assists, while Laura Szwed added three goals and two assists.
Abigail Kienbaum and Brittney Holtz had the other Ladywood goals, while Jenna MacDonell chipped in with two assists.
Kimberly Dickinson had a hat trick and one assist for the Knights, who trailed by only a goal after two periods, 4-3.
Jordan McIlroy contributed a goal and two assists, while Monique Squiers added a goal and one assist.
"It was back-and-forth game for sure,'' said Ladywood coach Bruce Peck, whose team was outshot 28-26.
On Monday, Ladywood peppered Bloomfield Hills Kingswood goaltender Hilary Schreiber with 33 shots, but came up empty in a 4-0 league setback at the Arctic Pond in Plymouth.
Second-place Kingswood, getting three goals from Tarasi Karega and one from Ariel Magidson, improved to 18-1 overall and 16-1 in the league with the victory.
"It's unusual to get that many shots against a team like Kingswood,'' Peck said. "We had three breakaways and numerous shots from close-range, but just couldn't score.''
Ladywood netminder Michelle Wyniemko, who also went
the distance against Liggett, made 25 saves.

Freshman goaltender Michelle Wyniemko’s been a big bright spot so far for Ladywood.
“She’s surpassed our expectations,” coach Bruce Peck said. “She’s getting more quality starts now.”
The Blazers picked up their play in January, and the team has begun to come together.
Laura Szwed is the team’s top offensive player, notching 24 goals through 16 games.
“She’s playing phenomenal hockey game in and game out,” Peck said.
Szwed, the team’s captain, kills penalties and plays on the power play.
“We haven’t stuck her in net yet,” Peck noted, laughing.
He notes the team’s strong point is its defense, and adds that all Blazers play two ways.
“That’s one of our strengths,” he notes.
Despite Szwed’s numbers, Peck wants to see more goals from his offense.
“We have some talented forwards, but we’re not finding the back of the net.”
The team is taking shots, but not high-percentage shots.
“I want them to fire the puck at the net and crash the net,” Peck said. “Right now we’re kind of throwing the puck at the net.”
The team’s best effort this season came in a 1-1 tie with second-place Plymouth-Canton-Salem.
“We dominated the game and played three strong periods,” the coach said. “We just had one letdown to let them tie it up at the end.”

Blazers achieve 6-1 victory over Marlins in Metro loop

Livonia Ladywood coach Bruce Peck wanted to put his best two skaters on the same line together.
And it's safe to say the experiment worked as sophomore right winger Laura Szwed had a hat trick and one assist and freshman center Heather Sartorious collected five assists as the Blazers routed host Farmington Hills Mercy for the second time this season, 6-1, in a Michigan Metro Girls High School Hockey League matchup at the Suburban Training Center.
"I've always wanted two evenly balanced lines, but Brittany Andrews had been playing so well that I decided to have her center the second line,'' Peck said. "Now we have four days of practice and I will try and stick with these line the rest of the season.
"I thought the two (Sartorious and Szwed) might jell.''
Ashley Ballarin, Abigail Kienbaum and Angie Iafano also scored goals for the victorious Blazers, who improved to 12-5-1 overall and 10-5-1 in the league.
Other Ladywood assists went to Danielle Foley and Mariah McVeigh.
After trailing 3-0 after one period and 4-0 after 30 minutes, Mercy averted the shutout on Audrey Martinuzzi's goal from Sara Smilnak and Kayla Martines.
Mercy netminder Jenna Martines faced a total of 42 shots, making 36 saves.
"She (Martines) played a good game, she stopped a lot of pucks,'' Peck said.
Michelle Wyniemko worked the first two periods in goal for the Blazers before giving way to Jessica Tuggle in the final period.
The loss drops Mercy to 3-12 in the league.

Grosse Pointe South overcomes Blazers
Grosse Pointe South remains perfect in the Michigan Metro Girls High School
Hockey League.
Alex Rentz pumped in four goals as the Blue Devils improved to 15-0 with a
7-3 win Thursday night over Livonia Ladywood at Detriot's City Sports Arena.
It was the first league meeting between the two teams. Unbeatens South and Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook-Kingswood met for first place on Saturday.
Ladywood, which slipped to 10-5-1 overall and 8-5-1 in the league, trailed by only one goal after two periods, 4-3, before South responded with three unanswered goals.
Ali Morawski, Amanda Marsh and Shami Entenman also tallied goals for South.
Mariah McVeigh, Laura Szwed and Ashley Ballarin tallied goals for the Blazers. Brittany Andrew chipped in with a pair of assists.
Michelle Wyniemko, who made 26 saves, was in goal for Ladywood.
Earlier in the week (Jan. 30), Ladywood romped to a 10-0 league win over
Bloomfield as Maria Rotondo scored a hat trick in a game played at Plymouth's
Arctic Pond.

South has won their last five games on the road. They return home to City Arena at 7:30 pm Thursday, February 3, to face the Ladywood Blazers (6th place in the league at 7-4-1). Be sure to watch for the play of Laura Szwed (#17), who has 22 goals in 12 games.
Ladywood played with vigor in the second, shooting 10 to South’s 12, and scoring 2 to South’s 1, with the scoring coming in the last minutes of the period. Ladywood sophomore Laura Szwed scored from Abigail Klenbaum and Jenna MacDonell at 3:44 to make it 3-2 South. Shami Entenman scored at 1:13 on a tip of a slapshot from the high slot by Katie Dosch. But Ladywood’s Ashley Ballarin surprised South goalie Whitney Hughes with a backhand, scoring at 0:37 from Andrews, to send the teams into the break at 4-3 South.

Regina, Ladywood to meet in Catholic Showcase
By virtue of their 7-0 win over Mercy Jan. 8, the Livonia Ladywood Blazers earned their way into the Catholic High School League’s first Girls’ Showcase game against rival Harper Woods Regina Saddlelites.
The CHSL from the Archdiocese of Detroit is holding a two-day Showcase at St. Mary’s Athletic Complex in Orchard Lake, Feb. 18-19, featuring boys and girls High Schools with ice hockey teams.
The girls game has been scheduled for 9 a.m., Saturday,
Feb. 19, and Regina has been designated the home team by virtue of regular
season wins over Ladywood, 4-3, and Mercy, 4-2, in games played for seeding
for the Showcase game that is being billed as an “exhibition.” Don’t
be surprised, though, if the winner walks away claiming at least an “unofficial”
CHSL title.
LADYWOOD 7, WALLED LAKE 3: Livonia Ladywood used a five point night by Laura Szwed to coast by Walled Lake at Arctic Pond on Friday night.
Szwed finished with a hatrick in the goals column and a pair of assists for the Blazers, who also recieve a goal and two assists from Jenna MacDonell and Abigail Kienbaum.
Ladywood led 1-0 after the first period and 5-3 after the second.
Ashley Ballarin and Brittany Andrews also picked up lamp-lighters for the Blazers (8-4-1 overall) and Heather Sartorius had a two-assist night.
Ladywood's Jessica Tuggle allowed the three goals on 11 shots and Caitlin Hojnacki made 29 saves on 36 shots for Walled Lake.
Lindsey Szutka had 2 goals and 1 assist to lead Walled Lake in the loss.
CRANBROOK 4, LADYWOOD 1: Livonia Ladywood gave up three goals in the final period to fall to host Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook on Wednesday night.
Ariel Magidson and Katherin Park each had a goal and two assists for the Cranes and Hilary Schreiber allowed only one goal on 24 shots.
Heather Sartorius picked up the only tally for the Blazers (7-4-1 overall) with Brittany Andrews and Lauren Doroghazi notching the helpers.
Michelle Wyniemko had a tough day in net allowing the four goals on 18 shots.

LADYWOOD 7, MERCY 0: Livonia Ladywood allowed only five shots in downing the Marlins of Farmington Hills Mercy on Saturday at Arctic Pond.
Laura Szwed compiled three goals and an assist while Abigail Kienbaum had a goal to go along with three helpers as the Blazers improved to 7-3 overall.
Brittany Andrews and Ashley Ballarin each had a lamp-lighter and an assist and Erika Doroghazi lit the lamp for Ladywood.
Michelle Wyniemko turned away the five shots she faced for the shutout.
LADYWOOD 1, CANTON-SALEM-PLYMOUTH 1: Olivia Pennebaker scored on a putback with 23 seconds remaining in regulation to force Livonia Ladywood to accept a tie at Canton's Arctic Edge Arena.
Blazers' coach Bruce Peck gives his account of Tuesday's tying goal:
"They had the extra attacker," Peck recounts, "we won the faceoff and went to shoot the puck down the ice but their defenseman held it in a dumped it toward the net. We just didn't cover it all the way and they just pushed it in."
Heather Sartorius tallied for the Blazers (7-3-1) in the second period with Brittney Holtz picking up the helper. Michelle Wyniemko stopped 22 shots in the contest for Ladywood.
Keely Kowalski stopped 24 in net for CSP, which improved to 8-1-1 overall.

Girls HS: Blazers torch Norsemen

The Ladywood Blazers faced a pivotal game to open 2005 and came out on top,
4-2, over the Grosse Pointe North Norsemen, Jan. 4, at the Arctic Pond in
Plymouth.
The win put the Blazers (4-3-0) over .500 and kept them in the fight to finish in the upper half of the Michigan Metro Girls High School Hockey League standings.
Just before the holiday break North (5-3-0) had beaten the Blazers, 3-2, at Viking Arena and it got the jump again in this game when North captain Jess Richardson put one past Blazers’ goalie Michelle Wyniemko in the first period. Ladywood responded, though, on an Abigail Kienbaum tally from Jenna MacDonnell and Laura Szwed.
“It was a hard fought game throughout,” said Ladywood coach Bruce Peck. “North came out and really played hard in the first period. We were fortunate enough to tie it up before the period ended and that gave us a lot of momentum heading into the second period.”
The Blazers built a 3-1 lead in the second on goals by Szwed (Kienbaum and Brittney Holtz) and Ashley Ballarin (Brittany Andrews and Heather Sartorius).
All hope was not lost for North when Emily Nelson scored a power play with 2:49 left in the third period after the Noresemen pulled its goalie and pulled within one, 3-2.
“North plays a well-disciplined and physical game,” said Peck. “I’m proud of the way my girls responded in the second and third. We came out in the third period with a two-goal lead and wanted to keep the pressure on them. We were able to do that until they scored.
“The last couple of minutes were intense, but we were able to hold them
off and score an empty-net goal (by Heather Sartorius from Andrews and Danielle
Foley) with nine seconds left. It was an exciting, back-and-forth game to
watch. They had 18 shots and we had 17. Michelle Wyniemko played a stellar
game making some amazing saves to keep us in the lead during the second period.”

Blazers ice North
Livonia Ladywood improved to 6-3 in the Michigan Metro Girls High School Hockey
League with a 4-2 victory Tuesday over visiting Grosse Pointe North in a game
played at the Arctic Pond in Plymouth.
Freshman Abigail Kienbaum, sophomore Laura Szwed and freshman Heather Sartorious each had a goal and one assist for the victorious Blazers, who led 3-1 after two periods.
Freshman Ashley Ballarin added Ladywood's other goal, while Brittany Andrews chipped in with two assists.
Jessica Richardson scored in the opening period for the Norsemen, now 5-5 in league play. Emily Nelson's third-period goal cut the deficit to 3-2 before Sartorious put it away with an empty netter.
Freshman Michelle Wyniemko played a strong game in goal for the Blazers, stopping 15 shots.
Ladywood had a total of 18 shots on goal.

Norsemen Torched
'Just ain't clickin' applied to the North Ladies this afternoon as they dropped
their first game of 2005, 4-2 against the Ladywood Blazers. North started
the scoring early when captain Jess Richardson put one past Blazers goalie
Michelle Wyniemko. But the Blazers answered back three minutes later to tie
it up. Laura Szwed Blasted a stinger past the Norsemen goalie to but the ladywood
team well ahead. Later after the game Chanel 4 news crews interviewed for
the High School review show Saturday night.
The second period tilted in Ladywood's favor, scoring the only two second
period goals.
All hope was not lost for North when Emily Nelson scored with 2:49 left after
the Noresemen pulled its goalie and pulled within one, 3-2. But the girls
would not be able to tie the game, and the Blazers would add an empty-netter
with nine seconds left. The Norsemen outshot the Blazers, 27-20, but the Blazer's
goalie would not let any shots down low, which is where North concentrated
their shots.
The girls will play their nest league game against GP South on Saturday.

Norsemen Chill the Blazers, 3-2, to end three-game skid
The Grosse Pointe North girls broke out of a three game slump on Dec. 15, as they handled the Ladywood Blazers, winning 3-2 at the Viking Arena.
The Norsemen abandoned their torpedo-style of play, which seemed to give them a more stable defense.
“We tried a different style of play at the beginning of the year. There were some benefits but the negatives were outweighing the positives so we went back to basics and what we know,” said North Coach Tim VanEckoute. “We also got three lines to play strong aggressive hockey for three periods and that made a big difference, too.”
The Blazers started out strong and scored first when Ladywood captain Laura Szwed wristed a shot over North goalie Angela Lee’s blocker two minutes into the game. North evened the score at the eight-minute mark when Maria Feldpausch, with an assist by Dayna Hohlfeldt, beat Blazer goalie Jessica Tuggle on a deflected shot.
The game remained tied at one through the second period, as North fired 12 shots to the Blazers’ three.
North came out strong in the third period as Emily Nelson scored unassisted within the first minute. Throughout the third, the Norsemen seemed to dominate, outshooting the Blazers 12-5. But with only 91 seconds left in the game, Szwed would score her second goal to tie the game, 2-2.
This set up an exciting finish and a North quick response. Just 17 seconds after Ladywood’s goal, North’s Marissa LaValley would get the game winner, with a Nelson assist.
North outshot Ladywood for the game, 29-15. The Lady Norsemen have a rematch with Ladywood (1-2-0) on Jan. 4, at the Arctic Pond in Plymouth.
The win boosted the Norsemen to a 3-2-0 season record and ended a three-game
losing streak, two in the Liggett Tournament followed by a league loss to
Plymouth-Canton-Salem Dec. 7.

The Regina Saddlelites won their third game of the season by defeating Ladywood, 4-3, in an exciting Michigan Metro Girls High School Hockey League game and ended five years of frustration against their pesky crosstown Catholic School rivals.
“Finally,” said Regina team mananger Jim Selegean Sr., who was head coach the last time the Saddlelites beat Ladywood. “Now I know how the Boston Red Sox fans feel.”
Well, it wasn’t quite as long (1918 to 2004 between Red Sox World Series titles), but the Blazers swept the season series from the Regina the last five seasons and that included a 6-4 playoff win last March.
“This contest featured back and forth action, outstanding offense and defense, and a mix of sound physical play,” said Selegean.
Regina Captain Danielle Turo drew first blood at the Arctic Pond in Plymouth in the opening period when she took a pass from Brittney DeBaeke and fired home a slap shot from the point. That lead lasted until midway through the second period when Ladywood’s Laura Szwed scored on a wrap-around goal.
It took the Saddlelites a minute to regain the lead as Captain Emily Blair wristed a hard 40 footer into the upper corner.
The third period saw Regina increase its lead three minutes in, when hard-working Erika Schilkey took a pass from linemate Cam Barkovic and jammed it into the Blazer net. The two-goal Saddlelite lead was short lived, however, as Heather Sartorius fired a point blank shot past Regina netminder Bridgette Gibson two minutes later.
With less than four minutes left, Regina sophomore defenseman Neiko Crown made the play of the game with an electrifying full-ice dash, finishing it with the game-winning goal.
Regina appeared to have the game in hand until Szwed drove home a goal with three minutes left to play.
The Saddlelites held off a late Blazer surge, with Gibson making several game-saving stops in the final minutes to preserve the Regina victory.
Regina head coach Kevin Selegean credited his team’s forechecking for the victory, as the Saddlelites thwarted the Blazers efforts to use their speed. Selegean also lauded the defensive work of Stephanie Stocking and Kaitlyn Erne for their hard play. Regina Sophomore Rachel Kare drew praise for her efforts in the offensive and defensive ends.
“It was our first league game of the season and we have a very young team, so it was more like a learning experience,” said Ladywood head coach Bruce Peck. “We have to learn how to play like a team game in and game out. I give credit to Regina for playing a solid game defensively and capitalizing on our mistakes.”

Laura Szwed's hat trick and one assist carried Livonia Ladywood to a 6-2 Michigan Metro High School Girls Hockey League victory Wednesday night over Northville in a game played a Novi Ice Arena.
The Blazers are now 3-1 overall and 1-1 in the league, while Northville falls to 3-3 and 1-1.
Abigail Kienbaum added a goal and three assists for the Blazers, who left 2-0 after one period and 4-2 after two periods. Rachel Killian chipped in with a goal and two assists, while Danielle Foley had the other Ladywood goal.
Sam Pope scored twice for the Mustangs. Ladywood netminder Jessica Tuggle made 11 saves.
On Dec. 4, Erika Schilkey had a goal and assist in Harper Woods Regina's 4-3 triumph over the host Blazers at Plymouth's Arctic Pond.
Danielle Turo, Emily Blair and Neiko Crown also scored for the victorious Saddlelites (3-2, 3-1).
Szwed had a pair of goals, while Heather Sartorius added a goal and assist
for Blazers.

The game was an exciting one. Laura got two goals and a roughing penalty. There will be video available below of the game highlights. The most exciting thing to happen was a face-off in center ice with only 3 seconds left. Laura got off an amazing shot that could have changed the outcome of the game. You must see the video!!!

Blazers capture Classic
Livonia Ladywood is off to a flying start in girls hockey. Sophomore Laura Szwed had a pair of goals and one assist Saturday as the Blazers defeated Northville 6-2 to win the Suburban Girls High School Classic at the Suburban Training Center in Farmington Hills.
The Blazers jumped out to a 4-1 first period advantage and never looked back.
"We played extremely well" Ladywood coach Bruce Peck said. We came out with four goals in the first period and from there we played a nice defensive game.
If we play like that al year, we'll have a lot of success.
Abigail Kienbaum added a goal and two assists, while Heather Sartorious and Brittany Andrews each chipped in with a goal and one assist for the Blazers, now 2-0. Ashley Ballarin had the other Ladywood goal. Bridget Hughes scored both goals for Northville. Ladywood goaltender Jessica Tuggle made 17 saves while Alicia Criswell had 19 saves for the Mustangs.

Ladywood Wins First Michigan Invitational
The Ladywood Blazers took first place in the first Michigan Invitational at
Suburban Arena. In Thursday night action, Ladywood defeated Walled Lake to
advance to the finals. Northville made it to the finals by beating Plymouth-Canton-Salem
in overtime. In the finals on Saturday, Ladywood took the championship by
beating Northville by a score of 5-2. The league is proud to offer two tournaments
each season; the Michigan Invitational and University Liggett School Tournament
held in December.

Livonia Ladywood takes first ever Suburban Girls High School Classic title
Blazers skate to 6-2 win over Northville in championship game
Led by tournament MVP Laura Szwed's two goals, Livonia Ladywood topped Northville, 6-2, in the championship game of the inaugural Suburban Girls High School Classic on Saturday, November 20. Bridget Hughes scored both of the Mustangs' goals.
Plymouth/Canton/Salem took third place in the tournament after beating Walled
Lake by a score of 10-0 in the consolation game. The Penguins' Olivia Pennebaker
scored four goals and Adrienne Cercone notched three in the win.
LADYWOOD 4, WALLED LAKE 2: Livonia Ladywood won its season opener Thursday by defeating Walled Lake in the Suburban Girls High School Classic held at the Suburban Training Center in Farmington Hills.
Walled Lake's Lindsey Szutka opened the scoring with 8:33 left in the first period on an assist from Paige Baker, but Ladywood's Heather Sartorius countered with the first of her two goals only 14 seconds later on an assist from Abigail Kienbaum.
With 13:38 remaining in the second period, Brittany Andrews' goal from Angie Iafano gave the Blazers the lead for keeps. Laura Szwed made it 3-1 with 9:52 to go in the same period assisted by Rachel Killian and Brittney Holtz.
Baker scored unassisted with 5:00 to play in the second to cut the deficit to 3-2, but with only a minute left in the final period Sartorious put it away on an assist from Kienbaum.
Ladywood outshot Walled Lake, 32-17.
"We dominated the game, we held the puck a lot of the time in their zone but we couldn't capitalize,'' Ladywood coach Bruce Peck said.
Michelle Wyniemko played the first two periods in goal for the Blazers before Jessica Tuggle finished up in the third. The two combined for 15 saves.
Alexis Gentile made 27 saves for Walled Lake.
